The Whig, Columbia, SC - 02.27.11 from 7 to 11 pm

Beneath the 1200 Main building in downtown Columbia, SC we entered The Whig through a graffiti-filled hallway. Plunging drapes, various animal skeletons (including a saber tooth tiger skull that triples the potency of your jaeger bomb upon a "tooth dip") and a dim orange glow set the stage for this eclectic Jukebox Hijackers affair.

The jukebox was special. No internet connection or touchscreen here, just a good ol' fashion Rowe model A magazine flip CD jukebox...delightful. Aside from the pet hedgehog named Fern at the end of the bar, this crowd was steeped in "indie" culture and railed against anything mainstream (except for sublimely ironic twists such as ELO.)

To date, this has been our most challenging and rewarding hijack...and here are the top 15.

1. Day Tripper - Nancy Sinatra
2. Streets of Baltimore - Gram Parsons
3. Psycho - The Sonics
4. Rumble - Link Wray
5. Telephone Line - Electric Light Orchestra (ELO)
6. Norwegian Wood - The Beatles
7. I Can See For Miles - The Who
8. Respect - Otis Redding
9. I Put A Spell On You - Screamin' Jay Hawkins
10. Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
11. Orgasm Addict - Buzzcocks
12. Let's Go Get Stoned - Ray Charles
13. Little Darlin' - The Diamonds
14. Maybellene - Chuck Berry
15. Stop Your Sobbing - Pretenders

  1. It feels so nice to find somebody with some original thoughts on touch screen jukeboxes. Really thankful to you for starting this.
